World Vegan Day is celebrated annually on November 1st - the anniversary of the creation of the Vegan Society. The Vegan Society was formed in England in November 1944 by a group of vegetarians who had recognized and come to reject the ethical compromises implicit in lacto-(i.e. dairy-dependent)vegetarianism and consequently decided to renounce the use of all animal products. It was Donald Watson, together with his wife Dorothy, who chose the word "vegan" by taking the first three and last two letter of "vegetarian".
